Over 7,600 Games Landed on Steam in 2017

Jan 10, 2018

We have some pretty amazing news coming in showing that over 7,600 games landed on Steam in 2017. This data is coming from Steam Spy, which is an unofficial analytics platform that looks at Steam. Steam had a huge year in 2017, with many hit games coming to the PC gaming platform. There were some people who thought PC gaming was dead in the waters, but the new data shows that is not the case at all. If you have a Steam account, then keep reading to learn about all of the cool things that happened with Steam in 2017.

Steam Had Over 7,600 Games Released in 2017

The biggest news to come out of the Steam Spy analytics was that more than 7,600 games landed on Steam during 2017. These were all new releases onto the Steam platform, and this is a huge increase from the year prior. Specifically, 7,672 new game releases ended up on Steam during the year, which is actually a record-breaking achievement. There were 2,427 more games released on Steam in 2017, which is a pretty significant growth.

We are super excited about this news because it shows that unlike what people thought, PC gaming seems to be coming back. It is coming back bigger and better than ever, with more titles and more high-quality graphics. The PC gaming world is trying to keep up with the console gaming systems, and the game developers on Steam are doing a very good job.

Steam has been gaining momentum for a while now, but the numbers for last year really show how much the platform has grown. Since 2004, Steam has managed about 19,000 games overall, which does not actually seem like that much. When you compare the lifetime releases on Steam to 2017, you can see that this past year is responsible for about 40 percent of all games released on Steam. Going even further down in the math for 2017, you end up with 21 new games released each day on Steam. That is huge compared to what 2016 and other previous years had. Valve is likely very happy with the record-breaking year that Steam had, which can be traced back to many great releases and a change in the system.

7,600 Games Released on Steam in 2017- New System Likely Helped

One of the things that likely helped Steam in 2017, was that Steam Greenlight was replaced with Steam Direct. There is now only a $100 fee associated with submission of a game on Steam, and that fee is recoupable with the new process. Steam Direct made it much easier for publishers to get onto Steam, and you get your submission fee back after a review period. The new Steam Direct system launched in the middle of June 2017, which is about the time we saw a spike in the games being released on the platform.

When you look at which game is the biggest on Steam right now, it should be no surprise that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is a huge hit. This game alone has brought in thousands of players. When we say thousands, we mean that it just broke over 3 million concurrent players. This game ended up surpassing other popular Steam games such as DOTA 2 and Grand Theft Auto V. It is really something that one game specifically could lead to such player growth for Steam.

This game alone is a reason why so many have signed up to Steam within the past year. We can expect that there will be even more growth in 2018, especially as more people hear about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. So tell us in the comments what you think of the growth on Steam. Do you think all of these games mean better quality games? Are you worried that games are just being pushed out without them going through the more in-depth review process? What game made you sign up for Steam?
