For those of you who enjoy playing American Football or Rugby games, Blocky Rugby is exactly what you are looking for. Featuring retro style blocky graphics, Blocky Rugby is all about taking the diamond-shaped ball over the finish line, without getting tackled by opposing attackers. You should not look at Blocky Rugby as a traditional sports game, because it definitely is not that. If you enjoyed playing classic games like Frogger, then you will surely enjoy playing Blocky Rugby for 2018!
Blocky Rugby is very similar to another sports/arcade game called Blocky Football, and both of these games have been developed and released by game developer Full Fat. Both games have nearly the same statistics as well. Blocky Rugby has been downloaded over a hundred thousand times with a rating of 3.9 out of 5 on Google Play Store and a 4.5 out of 5 star rating on iOS App Store in 2018. Blocky Rugby is free to download and play, should you be interested in giving it a shot.
About Blocky Rugby
Just like Blocky Football, the goal in Blocky Rugby is to bring the ball from one side of the field to the other side, without getting hit by any of the obstacles in front of you. The gameplay is quite similar to Frogger, but instead of playing as a frog, you play as a rugby player. The game starts with the opposite team kicking the rugby ball across the field. Your character will automatically catch the incoming rugby ball, after which you take control of your rugby player. The playfield consists of five lanes, and by swiping left and right, you need to make sure to avoid obstacles.
The obstacles in Blocky Rugby consist of rugby players of the opposing team, as well as players from your own team, who are supposed to defend you. The opposing team members will run down on the field in all of the five lanes, and if you spot one of them in the lane that you are running on, you need to either swipe left or right to avoid him. Sometimes, your defenders will tackle down opposing team members, which drops a silver point that you can grab. The only problem is that sometimes, your defenders are in your way, so you also need to avoid them.
Once you manage to run over the finish line with the rugby ball, you will get the opportunity to kick for a field goal. A rugby goal is quite similar to an American football goal. In the very middle of the field goal, there is a gold key, which you can win by kicking the ball exactly in the middle. Once a field goal sequence is active, an arrow will move up and down, and you need to make sure that you tap on your screen when the arrow is either in the green or yellow/gold zone. If you kick the ball in the red zone, your player will miss the goal, and you will have to start over.
Kicking the ball in the green zone will allow you to continue to the next level, but will not reward you with a gold key. You are only able to earn a gold key by tapping on your screen exactly when the arrow is over the yellow/gold zone. Next to earning a gold key, you will also proceed to the next level. Blocky Rugby is considered to be an endless runner, so the only way that you will lose in this game is when you get hit by another player, or when you fail to score a field goal.
The more levels you manage to clear in Blocky Rugby, the faster and more difficult the gameplay will be. The playfield will also keep getting longer and longer, which means that you will have to avoid more and more obstacles to clear a single level. The arrow at the field goal also speeds up, which makes it more difficult to score a field goal, and much more difficult to obtain a gold key.
As soon as you catch your first rugby ball, you will start earning points. You can see your total amount of points at the top-left corner of your screen. You will earn one point per meter that you have run throughout your gameplay. If you manage to get the rugby ball over the finish line, you will earn an extra five points. Successfully scoring a field goal either over the green or the yellow/gold zone will award you with an extra two points. When rugby players hit each other on the field, they will drop a point, which you can grab by running over them with your player.
There are two bonus features in Blocky Rugby. Just like in Blocky Football, Blocky Rugby also has the locker bonus game, which you can play when you have earned three gold keys. There are a total of six lockers, and if you manage to open three lockers with identical items in them, you will be able to earn different kinds of player skins. The other bonus feature in Blocky Rugby is in the form of random gifts, which you can open to either find a gold key inside, or a player skin.
Blocky Rugby In-game store
There are no in-game currencies in Blocky Rugby, other than the gold keys that you can earn by scoring a field goal over the yellow/gold zone, or by opening up random gifts. Even though you can earn gold keys for free, you can’t actually use them to purchase items in the in-game store. This means that you will have to spend real money to purchase the items in the in-game store.
The in-game store in Blocky Rugby has two categories; Rugby Fields and Player Skins. There are a total of eight different rugby fields in Blocky Rugby. The first field is the classic one, which is already unlocked for you. In order to unlock the next seven rugby fields, you are going to need to own a certain amount of player skins. Just to give an example, the next rugby field is called Muddy, and in order to be able to play on that field, you will need to unlock at least five skins.
There are a total of sixty five player skins in Blocky Rugby, and just like the rugby fields, the first player skin is already unlocked for you. The player skins in Blocky Rugby vary random characters such as a Monkey or a Knight, to actual international jerseys, such as Argentina and Ireland. In order to unlock one of the player skins, you need to be willing to pay $0.99 for it. There is no way for you to unlock more player skins for free, other than the by playing the bonus games.
At the end of each run, you will get asked if you want to remove all the advertisements in Blocky Rugby. Of course, you can just leave them, but that means that you will get obstructed by them. You also have the option to temporarily remove them by watching an advertisement video. If you rather remove them completely, you can do that by purchasing Remove All Ads for $1.99.
Cheats & Tips for Blocky Rugby
Do not believe any of the websites that claim they have a working cheat tool for Blocky Rugby, because they are all designed to make money off of you. According to those websites, you will be able to unlock all of the player skins and rugby fields for free, but before you are able to use their Blocky Rugby hack tool, you first need to complete a random survey on a download site.
The reason why you need to complete a survey is because the entire scam is based on that. For every survey that gets completed on those download websites, the scammers behind the fake hack tools earn a lot of money. The worst part is that the files on those websites are malicious, most likely containing harmful viruses/keyloggers, which will cause damage to your computer.
Blocky Rugby Gameplay Tips and Tricks
The most important tip to achieve a high score in Blocky Rugby is that you should look ahead while you are playing the game. The playfield in Blocky Rugby consists of five lanes, and if you do not pay attention to the obstacles, it is very easy for you to get hit by one of them. In order to avoid this, you should look ahead, and see in which lanes the tacklers are. By doing this, you will be able to change lanes way before any of the tacklers reach the half of the playfield.
If you are irritated by all the advertisements in Blocky Rugby, but you do not feel like spending $1.99 on a free-to-play mobile game, you could always use the Airplane Mode trick. The reason why this is called the Airplane Mode trick is because it entails you activating Airplane Mode on your tablet or smartphone. You could also just deactivate your Wi-Fi and mobile data functions.
When you play Blocky Rugby without an internet connection, there is no way for the ad servers in the game to push advertisements to your tablet or smartphone. The reason why you can use the Airplane Mode trick in Blocky Rugby is because there are no multiplayer features, so there is no need for you to have access to an internet connection anyways. The Airplane Mode trick will work in any mobile game that does not need access to an internet connection to play.
Blocky Rugby Review
Before I even started playing Blocky Rugby, I already noticed similarities with another game. At first, I did not realize that Blocky Rugby and Blocky Football were made by the same developers, but upon seeing how the game looked, I knew immediately that Full Fat was behind this game. It seems like the developers took Blocky Football’s success, and decided to make a rugby version of the game. As far as I can tell, Blocky Rugby is exactly the same game as Blocky Football, with a couple of different skins added to it, such as a rugby ball, instead of a regular football.
An aspect that I like about Blocky Rugby is that it gradually becomes more challenging. At first, the gameplay is actually quite easy, and you will be able to easily reach the finish line; however, the more you progress through the game without failing to score a field goal, the more difficult the gameplay will become. This also makes Blocky Rugby a perfect game to kill some time.
Another positive aspect about Blocky Rugby is that there are no playtime limitation systems in the game, which means that you can play the game as long and often as you would like. Many free-to-play mobile games have playtime limitation systems in them, which come in the form of energy bars, lives or timers. I am very happy that this is not the case in Blocky Rugby.
During my gameplay in Blocky Rugby, I did experience several negative aspects. For starters, the game has so many advertisements in them, there is no way that you would not get annoyed or obstructed by them. The developers allow you to get rid of those advertisements temporarily by watching an advertisement video, which is not a bad offer, but the advertisements keep coming back after that. I don’t believe that anyone would consider paying $1.99 just to get rid of all the advertisements in Blocky Rugby. Asking for money to remove the advertisements makes it feel like the developers have implemented annoying advertisements on purpose, which is a shame.
Next to the advertisements, it also seems like the developers thought it would be a good idea to keep asking for five star ratings from the players. Every time when I see something like this, it just makes me want to rate the game zero stars out of five. The developers should know that people will rate their game, if they feel like the game is worth getting rated by them.
I also think it is a bad idea to offer player skins for real money only. You can unlock player skins for free by playing the bonus locker game, but the change of that happening is very minimal. I believe that you should be able to unlock player skins by just playing the game.
Blocky Rugby Ratings
Artwork: I give Blocky Rugby an 8/10 for its artwork. I have already mentioned that Blocky Rugby features retro style blocky graphics, quite similar to Blocky Football. I like the fact that the graphics in Blocky Rugby are blocky, simply because it makes the game look unique. It is nice that there are so many animations in Blocky Rugby as well, such as when you score a goal. The best part is that the crowds actually cheer when you score, or get sad when you get tackled.
Music & SFX: I give Blocky Rugby a 7/10 for its music and SFX. Blocky Rugby has a nice main menu soundtrack, fitting the overall style of the game nicely. Other than that, there are no soundtracks in the game, but that is not such a big deal. It is nice that there are many sound effects implemented into the game, making the overall gameplay more exciting and enjoyable.
Story & Originality: I give Blocky Rugby a 3/10 for its story and originality. It is very unfortunate to see that Blocky Rugby is exactly the same game as Blocky Football, both of these games are made by the same developers. Even though Blocky Football was a quite original game, it doesn’t mean that it is alright to take that same game, add a few new skins to it, and claim that it is an entirely different game. I could not spot any original features in Blocky Rugby. Even the graphics and sound effects are very similar. This is very unfortunate, especially because the developers could have given Blocky Rugby a different twist, but instead chose to take the easy path. There is not story in Blocky Rugby, but since it is an arcade/sports game, it doesn’t need one anyways.
General Gameplay: I give Blocky Rugby a 7/10 for general gameplay. Blocky Rugby is a great game for when you want to kill some time. It is fast paced, challenging and it can be played whenever you have the time for it. The general gameplay is easy to get used to, simply because the controls are very easy. All you have to do is swipe left or right to change lanes, and avoid all the obstacles in the game. The user interface is nicely designed as well, fitting the overall theme.
Addictiveness: I give Blocky Rugby a 7/10 for addictiveness. I think Blocky Rugby is quite an addictive mobile game, especially because the gameplay becomes more challenging, the further you progress through the game. The addictiveness also increases because there are no playtime limitation systems in the game, allowing you to play the game as long as you want to, whenever you feel like it. I would have rated Blocky Rugby higher for its addictiveness if the developers did not implement so many advertisements into the game. Also, Blocky Rugby doesn’t have any original features at all, which means that you will be playing the same game as Blocky Football.
All things considered, I give Blocky Rugby a 6/10.
