Over the past couple of years, there has been an influx of survival games, especially because of Steam’s Greenlight program. More and more indie developers try their hand at the survival genre, due to the fact that a lot of people seem interested in them. Popularity has skyrocketed with the help of popular You Tubers, specifically the ones that review games, make let’s plays or make money by playing games in general.
That is how Don’t Starve came to be as well, and when it hit the Steam Store, it quickly became clear that it would become a huge success. Riding on this success, Klei Entertainment decided to release Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition for the iPad at first, followed by the iPhone version with a price tag of $4,99.
What is Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition all about?
In Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition, you play as Wilson, who is a scientist that has been trapped and somehow transported to a mysterious wilderness world. At first, everything seems to be like a bad nightmare, but Wilson quickly realizes that he is not sleeping. He needs to explore his surroundings and find his way back home
What makes Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition really difficult is the fact that you get thrown into the world, and there are no instructions or help available. If you are playing the game for the first time, you will not know what you are supposed to do. You will most likely walk around, pick some berries and carrots and eat in order to not starve.
Once you have made it through the initial stage of the game, you will notice that you need tools in order to harvest resources. That being said, you will need an axe to cut down trees for wood, which you need in order to build camp fires. But what if it becomes night and you have no campfire to protect you from the darkness? Well, let’s just say that you are not alone and that there are a lot of evil “things” lurking.
Is Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition worth the $4,99 price tag?
It really depends in your taste of games, when it comes to the fact if the $4,99 price tag for Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition is worth it or not. For starters, the PC version of the game has been awarded with multiple nominees and awards, such as the Capsule Computers: Editor’s Choice and Indie Game Reviewer: Game of the Year award.
Next to all the nominees and awards, Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition has several key features that might be attractive to people who enjoy playing survival games. The worlds in Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition are randomly generated. This means that you can generate a new world, anytime you are tired of dying in the same world over and over again.
In Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition, you also start with nothing, which means that you have to explore the environment and exploit the inhabitants of the mysterious world that you are in. You also need to gather food and resources, craft tools to make your survival easier, research new technologies and of course, fight against evil monsters in order to survive.
The game also has a very smooth touch interface and the same 2D characters and creatures, implemented in a unique 3D world. I believe the developers at Klei Entertainment have done a very nice job, especially considering that they did not compromise or leave out any features. This means that Don’t Starve: Pocket Edition is identical to the PC and PlayStation versions of the game, and if you enjoy survival games, you should definitely pick this on up and try it out!
