We told you a while back that the Essential smartphones would be updated to Android 8.1, bypassing Android 8.0 over security concerns. It appears that Essential is now rolling out the new update. This is bringing the smartphones to Android 8.1 Oreo as we speak. The new change is great because Essential smartphones have been stuck on Android Nougat 7 since the news of bypassing 8.0 was announced. Now that Android Oreo 8.1 has been released though, the smartphones are now getting this update.

Essential Smartphones Now Getting Android 8.1 Oreo Update

We are super happy to tell you about the Essential smartphones getting the new Android Oreo 8.1 update. Essential smartphones itself have not been out very long, only becoming available in the middle of 2017. Now, the new smartphones are getting the much-requested Android 8.1 update. This comes as the company said a while back, it would not be rolling out Android 8.0 Oreo due to security concerns. The company said the new update should be rolling out immediately to all Essential smartphones.

There was already a beta test going on for Android 8.1 Oreo, so some people might have been a part of that testing. The stability concerns and security issues that impacted Android 8.0 are not present in Android 8.1 Oreo. That is why Essential decided to skip 8 and go right to 8.1. The company said via Twitter that you can now download the update right from your Android device. There are a lot of changes to Android Oreo, and 8.1 is even better than 8.0.

Android Oreo 8.1 Offers Essential Smartphones New Features

When it comes to Android 8.1 Oreo, you will find quite a few changes that will excite you. If you are coming to Oreo from Nougat, you will notice a quicker sign-in and quicker start-up overall. Other new changes include Google Play Protect, which is a new service from Google. Play Protect will run scans on the apps to ensure that they are not malware. The scans happen both before you install an app and after it has been installed. It is just like another layer of security for your Android device.

Beyond that, there are also instant apps and the smart text select ability with Android 8.1 Oreo. Did we mention 8.1 also has an option so you can play a video in a tab but keep browsing with other tabs? You will get that ability as well with this update. Android 8.1 Oreo comes with a ton of new features and abilities. We have told you about a few of them, but there are many other new features in this update. It is still not as popular as Android Nougat or Marshmallow though, but it has not been out long either.

Essential Smartphones Still Lack in Popularity

When it comes to Essential, there are still a lot of people who have opted not to try these new Android phones. Only 90,000 Essential phones have been shipped out in the first six-months of launch. That is not really a huge number when you compare to other notable Android smartphone manufacturers. As Essential begins to build up a customer base, more people will become interested in the smartphones from this company.

For now, those who do have an Essential smartphone can download the new Android Oreo 8.1 update right now. The over-the-air update should be rolling out right now, since the company said it was rolling out immediately. If you do not see the over-the-air update yet, you can go into Settings and download the update manually. Tell us in the comments if you own an Essential phone.
