Google Voice Finally Updates On iOS & Android

Jan 23, 2017

Google Voice has finally received an update on iOS and Android, and this is the first update that Google Voice has had in many years. The update was supposed to come a few weeks ago, but it ended up getting delayed. Now, you will find that Google Voice on Android and iOS is completely redesigned

Google Voice Android & iOS Apps Get New Update

Do you know how long it has been since Google Voice has been updated? It might surprise you to know that Google Voice has not been updated in five years. That is a really long time considering how much has changed on both iOS and Android in the past few years. You will find both a new user interface and new features on both the iOS and Android versions of the app. Android is getting the Google Voice update first, so you can head to Google Play now to download the new Google Voice. iOS will be getting the updated version of Google Voice within the next couple days, so you can download the new Google Voice from Apple’s App Store by the end of the week.

One thing you will notice is that there is a new Security setting within Google Voice. This new setting allows you to filter all the spam out no matter where it is coming from. That is really nice because spam has become a huge problem for people on both iOS and Android, especially when it comes to the robo calls and text messages.

Another cool feature you will notice is that you have a new inbox, and it allows for the separation of various types of communication. You will notice separate tabs for voicemails, calls, and text messages. There is new support for Messaging which allows you to send both photo messages and group messages. You also will have text and call history search functionality. This is great because if you do not have someone saved in your phone, you will be able to go back and quickly search for the person or number you are looking for.

When it comes to the Android Google Voice app update, you will notice that there is now support for the Direct Reply option that is available on Android Nougat. Right now though, Google Voice does not support the Nougat shortcuts, Direct Share, Gboard or the mini conversations view. These features that are lacking will likely be coming up in another update, especially since Google said that Google Voice is going to be getting regular updates on Android and iOS from now on.

There are three tabs on the new look though, which will show you your missed items, and that is pretty cool. You have group texting and you no longer need to have Google Hangouts on your device to activate this feature, which is nice for people who do not like Google Hangouts. Speaking of Hangouts, the interface looks pretty similar on both the iOS and Android versions of the app. You will not be able to see your Google Hangouts conversations in Google Voice yet though, but this integration will be coming in the near future so keep your eyes peeled for this feature coming up.

Another feature on the Google Voice iOS and Android app update includes voicemail transcriptions for Spanish now too. The voicemail transcription has been an option available the entire time, but now adding Spanish is bringing the feature to even more people who use this app. There is also 3D Touch support for the iPhone, which is very nice for the iOS users out there. The in-notification replies feature is currently available on the Android version, but for now this feature is not supported on iOS. It likely will be coming on a future update for iOS, so if you have iOS do not get discouraged that you do not have this feature yet.

Google claims that the Google Voice is now going to be getting regular updates on both iOS and Android. We are not sure though if Google will actually follow through with this promise. It is hard to get too excited because Google Voice has been abandoned by Google for so long that we will need to see a lot of updates to this app to know Google is making it a priority. For people who want to download the latest version of Google Voice, you can head to Google Play if you have an Android device to download it right now. If you still have Google Voice on your Android, you also can just wait for the over-the-air update to hit your Android device.

If you have an iOS device, you will be waiting for a few more days before you see the update on your Apple device. You also will be able to get the Google Voice updated version for iOS through Apple’s App store once the new version is released for iOS later this week. Even though there are not too many new features in the new update, you will find the user interface changes and small feature changes very refreshing and it makes the app much easier to use on both iOS and Android.
