We have been telling you for quite a while about how Microsoft has been really focusing on both iOS and Android as opposed to the Windows smartphones. There is now a new Microsoft Cortana Android update that was released in which makes Microsoft Cortana the default digital assistant. Read on to learn more about the new Microsoft Cortana Android update and what this means for you as an Android smartphone owner.

Microsoft Cortana Android Update Adds Option to Make Cortana Default

The best part about the new Microsoft Cortana Android update is that you can now officially set Microsoft Cortana as the default digital assistant for your Android device. There was always an option to set Cortana as the default, although it took this latest update to make it an official feature of the app.

If you are using an Android device, you probably have noticed that Google Assistant, also called Google Now, is the Google version of the digital assistant. Google Assistant works well enough for some people, but other people feel like Microsoft Cortana brings more to the table than Google Assistant.

You will be able to make Microsoft Cortana the default digital assistant on your Android device for anything you want, including for SMS messaging, browsing the web, and now just using Cortana as your go-to digital assistant for other queries you have. It is very easy to set Microsoft Cortana as the default digital assistant with the Microsoft Cortana Android update. All you need to do is long-press the Home button and then it will bring up a window.

The window will ask if you want to make Microsoft Cortana the default digital assistant on your Android device. You can choose to set Cortana as the default, meaning always launch Microsoft Cortana, or just choose to launch Cortana once. If you say that you do want to make Microsoft Cortana the default assistant, you then are automatically taken to the Settings section of your Android device to set the app configuration.

Microsoft Cortana Android Update Details

If you have ever used an iOS device before, then you know that right now, Apple does not let you choose another assistant besides Siri as the default. This is one area where Google seems to be stepping up and getting ahead of Apple. By allowing Microsoft Cortana to be set as the default digital assistant, Google is giving the people on Android a choice.

This is a choice that a lot of people have wanted, and it is a choice that people on iOS devices will likely envy. Even though you now officially have the option to set Microsoft Cortana as the default assistant, there are still a couple of downsides to this new app update.

As far as the Microsoft Cortana Android app update is concerned, one thing that is kind of a letdown is that you cannot use Microsoft Cortana in landscape mode. This is likely a small issue that will get fixed in a later Microsoft Cortana update, so it really is not that big of a deal. There are a couple of other small issues as well, such as it not being able to launch via the regular Android voice command system. This is also something that probably will be fixed in a later update, so we are not too worried about that minor issue. As long as you set Cortana as the default digital assistant on your Android device, all functionality is present except the landscape mode issue.

If you would like to try the new Microsoft Cortana digital assistant for Android and set it up as the default assistant, you will need to have the new Microsoft Cortana Android update on your device. The new version of Microsoft Cortana is version 2.8.0, which is now live on Google Play Store. You will see that in the app update notes, it lists the ability to set Cortana as your default digital assistant.

You also will enjoy the fact that everything in terms of your Cortana settings easily go from Android to your computer. Everything you have in Cortana, including your reminders, are available in the Android version of the app. The fact that you can easily go from your Android device to your computer running Windows 10, and all of your Settings transfer and sync, really makes Microsoft Cortana a great option for Android users.
