Every year in southern California avid “youtubers” get together in the Anaheim Convention Center to meet their favorite content creators and discuss the latest on YouTube. During her keynote presentation, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki announced that the YouTube mobile application will be getting a renovation. Wojcicki hit upon some key points to expand the company’s mobile platform and give thanks to all the creators on the website because they have made YouTube as big as it is.
The Emphasis on “mobile, mobile, mobile”
As she stated in her press conference, Wojcicki talked to the audience about how YouTube is becoming one of the most prominent “mobile companies.” She presented the facts on how more than half of all the views on Youtube today come from peoples’ mobile devices as they are going about in their daily lives. As well as the mobile revenue is growing at around 100% every year from all the advertisements that creators put before the video starts to keep YouTube free.
The CEO Wojcicki stated how impressive that YouTube has had growing success as it reaches its ten-year anniversary. What makes this even more remarkable is that even with competition from growing applications like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, Vine, Instagram, etc. YouTube is still growing as it expands the way we watch videos.
The new YouTube app has 3 main features to make watching simpler for users, the first is a personalized home page, the second is a page to manage the subscriptions users have made to their favorite channels, and the user account page to manage settings. The CEO stated that the main emphasis at the YouTube headquarters is to maximize discovery and give the people as many options as they can to create the videos they have imagined.
The new app wants to allow video creators to be able to create videos from anywhere at the palm of their hands. This new app has new tools for editing, filters, music, and vertical video playback similar to rival video application Snapchat. Also they have listened to the creators requests by making an option that will make it simple for their fans to opt in to all the notifications from their channel. A feature I am personally interested in is that YouTube plans to add a 360 degree 3-D video support to give the viewers a truly immersive watching experience.
What can be taken from this key-note presentation by Susan Wojcicki is that she wants to give thanks to all of the creators that have made YouTube as big as it is today and also she wants to shift the company’s focus towards perfecting their mobile app. She would like everyone to be able to capture videos with all of this amazing technology because the more user-friendly this app can be the more users it will gain because of its simple to use app interface.
Currently the new YouTube app is available on Android but will soon becoming to IOS devices once all the features are worked out. Only time will tell if YouTube has taken the right direction to keep growing, but what we do know for sure is that they are listening to the community and want to please the community because with out the community there is no YouTube.
