How to Record Phone Calls on iPhone in 2018 – iOS Guide & Apps

Jun 23, 2017

Whether you want to record a prank caller, or simply an important conversation, there are a number of ways to record phone calls on your iPhone. Since Apple is very strict on privacy, it is difficult to find proper third-party phone call recorder apps on iOS App Store. If you have a jailbroken iPhone, the amount of options you have are increased.

However, not everyone is willing to jailbreak their smartphones, and for those people, there is a great workaround. All you need to do is make sure that you have voicemail enabled through your mobile carrier. In this article, you’ll learn how to record phone calls on iOS, with and without third-party apps.

Record & Save Phone Calls using Voicemail

As mentioned above, you can use your voicemail as a workaround to record phone calls on your iPhone. In this case, the voicemail feature will be used as a phone call recorder. Since the voicemail feature is built into the iPhone, the audio files can easily be exported. Great thing is, you can use this method to record regular phone calls, as well as FaceTime calls.

Your mobile carrier might have certain restrictions when it comes to voicemail recordings. For instance, different carriers have different file size restrictions, duration restrictions etc. You should also turn off the “Call Waiting” feature on your iPhone, to make sure that you’ll be able to record calls by voicemails. You can turn off the “Call Waiting” feature on iPhone by going to Settings > Phone > Call Waiting. Simply tap on the option to turn it off.

You will also need to be running at least iOS 9.0 on your iPhone, in order to be able to export voicemail recordings. If you don’t need to export your voicemail recordings, it is possible to use this method in previous iOS versions. However, the newer the iOS version, the better.

If you meet the requirements, simply follow these steps to start recording phone calls:
  1. Go to your contacts
  2. Call a contact
  3. Once your contact answers, tap on the “Add Call” button

  1. Call your own phone number
  2. Since you are in a call, it should go to voicemail
  3. Wait until your voicemail message starts recording
  4. Tap on the “Merge Calls” button to start recording your actual call

  1. Once the call has been concluded, tap on “Voicemail” to see your messages
  2. Tap on the voicemail message to listen to the recorded phone call
  3. If you want to export the voicemail message, simply tap on the “Share” button

Now you have successfully recorded a phone call on your iPhone, without actually using any third-party apps. You can export any recorded voicemail messages, even by using the default iMessage app, or by email. If you don’t need to export any of your voicemail messages, leave them on your iPhone so you can listen back to them whenever you want.

Record Phone Calls using Third-Party Apps

It is also possible to use third-party apps to record phone calls on your iPhone. Naturally, a third-party app will provide more features, at least compared to the voicemail method. One of the best third-party apps to record phone calls on your iPhone is called TapACall. The pro version might cost 10 dollars a year, but the app is very user-friendly. The recordings are also of very high quality. You can record both incoming and outgoing phone calls using TapACall. The recordings are saved as mp3 files, which makes them easy to export to other devices.

There is a TapACall “Lite” version available, allowing you to test out the features that the app has to offer. To record a phone call, all you have to do is tap on the “Record” button. The call gets put on hold, and you’ll have to merge the calls to start recording with TapACall. To put it simple, TapACall joins in and creates a conference call, allowing the app to record the call.

Other Third-Party Apps

There are several other highly-rated apps that you can use to record phone calls on your iPhone. If you are looking for a free alternative to TapACall, you should check out an app called Voice Recorder. This app allows you to record phone calls, and doesn’t have any limits as to how long the phone calls can be. You can directly sync your recordings to OneDrive and DropBox, as well as several other cloud services. The great thing about Voice Recorder is that it is a 100% free. There are no in-app purchases, no limitations and no hidden costs.

iPadio is another decent, and free, phone call recorder app for iOS. Originally, iPadio is used to record different kinds of audio, using your iPhone. However, the app is also capable of recording phone calls for you. Just like the other apps, you will have to merge iPadio into your phone calls to allow a recording to be made. The great thing about iPadio is that you will receive a unique PIN code, which you will need to merge iPadio into your phone calls. This is an extra layer of security, to make sure that other third parties will not start listening in. You can find iPadio on App Store. It doesn’t have any in-app purchases or hidden costs.

Google Voice

Last but not least, you could always record phone calls on your iPhone by using Google Voice. While it is known that Google’s apps are not very well optimized for iOS, Google Voice is still a great alternative to record phone calls on your iPhone. However, there are some restrictions to Google Voice. For starters, Google Voice is only available in the United States of America. Secondly, you will have to enable the recording option manually. Lastly, your partner will receive an automated voice notification, indicating that you started recording the call. To enable recording using Google Voice, you will have to follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Google Voice website
  2. Click on the “Gear” at the top-right corner
  3. Go to “Settings”
  4. Select the “Calls” Tab
  5. Check the box that says “Enable Recording”
  6. Now you can start recording phone calls by pressing “4”
  7. To stop recording phone calls, simply press on “4” again
  8. Keep in mind that the other person in the phone call will receive a notification
  • I’ve been an enthusiastic user of ipadio for a long time, but it has disappeared from the App Store for Spain. Is it still available in other parts of the world?
