We have been waiting for the day that the Steam concurrent users passed 18 million, and it seems that record was just broken. Over 18 million users were on Steam this weekend, which is a new record. That was not the only record that was set on Steam this weekend either. If you have a Steam account, keep reading about the new records that were just broke this weekend. We hope that these new records being broken will help Steam in the long term and get more people interested in joining the platform.
Concurrent Users on Steam Hits 18 Million- A New Record
The biggest record that was broken this weekend on Steam is that more than 18 million concurrent players were on Steam. Another new record that was broken this weekend was that over seven million concurrent players were in-game. The number of concurrent users on Steam has sharply went up within the past year. When you compared this year to the same time last year as far as concurrent players go, there is a 30 percent increase this year. For Steam and Valve, this is great news because it shows just how many more people are playing on Steam.
A lot of the Steam growth in 2017, was happening toward the second part of the year. In April 2017, Steam managed 14 million users per day at the peak. It quickly started rising from there with 16 million by October and over 17 million in November. A couple months after that, which is this past weekend, there were over 18.5 million concurrent users on Steam. If the same path continues, then it is likely by April 2018, that we will see more than 20 million concurrent users on Steam.
Steam Concurrent Users Passes 18 Million & Growing Monthly
It is pretty impressive that within the last half of 2017, we saw a growth of more than 3.5 million concurrent users on Steam. You probably can guess which game likely was causing the substantial growth on Steam. PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds was a huge hit and likely is where a lot of the concurrent players were at. In fact, it is not a coincidence that PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds peaked this weekend with 3.16 million users.
That is probably why the record was just broken of seven million in-game players on Steam. Nearly half of the record-breaking seven million in-game players were on this game alone. That is huge and goes to show the overall popularity of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. This game has been a hit ever since it was released and has been moving up the Steam charts and staying there for a while now.
Concurrent User Growth on Steam is Great News for Valve
This is really good news for Valve as the company is trying to make Steam one of the biggest, if not the biggest, gaming platforms out there. Most people who do gaming on their PC go through Steam already, and even better games are being added to entice players. Steam has went through many changes recently, such as replacing Steam Greenlight with Steam Direct. This new process was to enable more quality games to get onto the Steam platform. Valve has also been cracking down on scammers and those abusing the Steam platform and has been banning people and game developers left and right.
We believe that Steam will easily pass 20 million concurrent users in the first half of this year. It is likely that Steam will be closer to 25 million concurrent users by the end of the year. So tell us in the comments what you think of this news. Do you think the growth is tied directly to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds? Are you one who thinks the novelty of this game will wear off sooner than later?
