Steam Machines Preview Part 1: Asus ROG GR8S & Alternate

    Sep 23, 2015

There are a lot different Steam Machines available for pre-order in the Steam Store, and in this article, we are going to take a closer look at all of the available Steam Machines. This preview article will be divided in several parts, as there are many Steam Machines available.

    Alienware Steam Machine

The Alienware Alpha Console is the first console that is designed specifically for Valve’s Steam Big Picture mode, which is believed to be the best way to play and enjoy PC games on your television in the living room.

Alienware Alpha is a one hundred percent ready-to-use console. When you pre-order the Alienware Alpha console, you will also receive an Xbox 360 controller. Because of the fact that the interface is designed exclusively for Alienware, the console is meant to be simple and hassle free, allowing you to easily navigate without a keyboard or mouse.

If you already have a Steam account, you can connect it with your Alienware Alpha and gain access to your own library. This allows you to play your own games on your TV.

Alienware Alpha has a very powerful and truly unique GPU. Alienware and NVIDIA engineers worked together to develop a customized graphics solution, which provides a maximum gaming performance and sets a precise balance between temperature control and energy consumption. This resulted in the development of an ideal graphics card, keeping the platform cool and quit, while providing the graphical power that gamers demand.

By using the GTX 860m, based on the latest Maxwell architecture from NVIDIA, Alienware was able to improve the standard performance even further. This allows the GPU to work at faster speeds, which you will not find in any other device. The first model of the Alienware Steam Machine has 2GB of GDDR5 video memory, and also comes with 4GB of RAM and an Intel Core i3 processor.

The Alienware Steam Machine comes with the games: PAYDAY 2, Magicka, Dungeons and Daemons DLC and Gauntlet Helm and will be selling at a starting price of $449.

    Alternate Steam Machine

Next in line is the Alternate Steam Machine, which has been manufactured by online electronics store. On the Alternate website, you are able to order different kinds of hardware, complete PCs, notebooks, tablets and even games and consoles. Alternate decided that it wanted a piece of the Steam Machines pie, and decided the release several different models.

Even though the starting price for the Alternate Steam Machine is much higher compared to the Alienware Steam Machine, it does come with an NVIDIA Geforce GTX750Ti and 8GB of RAM, which means that the basic model is already superior.

The biggest difference between the Alternate and Alienware Steam Machines is that the Alternate one comes with a 500GB solid-state hybrid drive, which should make it work much faster and allow for faster loading speeds.

The starting price for the Alternate Steam Machine is set at $1099, but the price can easily run up to $1899, depending on which model of the machine you purchase. Of course, at a higher price comes a much better Steam Machine, with better hardware and specifications.

    Asus ROG GR8S

Asus has also announced that they are manufacturing a Steam Machine, and will release it in November. The device is called GR8S and despite the fact that it is intended to be used in the living room, it doesn’t have a very subtle appearance. The Asus ROG GR8S has a black and red color scheme, which is in line with the rest of the Republic of Gamers series. Both on the left and right side, you will also find a ROG logo.

Asus also offers different models of their Steam Machine. You can choose between an Intel Core i5 or Intel Core i7 processor and a graphics chip from NVIDIA Maxwell Geforce GTX 900 series. You can choose between 4GB and 16GB of memory and between 128 and 512GB of SSD or 500GB to 1TB of regular hard drive storage.

The Asus ROG GR8S supports a 4K resolution at 60Hz. The machine also has four USB 3.0 ports and a Gigabit LAN connection. The starting price for the Asus ROG GR8S is $699,99.
