We know that throughout the past couple years Steam has gained a lot of users. When it comes to just how many users Steam has gained, we know it is quite a few due to the latest milestone from the Steam Stat’s page. For the first time ever, Steam broke a record of over 14 million concurrent users.
Steam Hits Concurrent User Milestone of 14 Million
Having 14 million concurrent users on Steam means that there were 14 million people using Steam at the same time. This happened early on in the day January 7, and it wound up getting all of the way to 14,207, 039. It did end up going back down to 13 million plus, but for quite a while there were 14 million concurrent users on the gaming site.
This information was found through the Steam Stats page, where you can find this and a lot of other cool information and statistics. When you look at the 14 million concurrent users, it seems “DOTA 2” had the highest concurrent user count. “DOTA 2” had 951,942 users on at once. This should not come as a shock because “DOTA 2” is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, game on Steam right now. Then “Counter-Strike: Global Offensive” came in second with 675,195 players. “Grand Theft Auto V” also was on this concurrent user list coming in third with 116,230 players.
We do think it is important to tell you that concurrent user and concurrent player counts are different. Concurrent users are when a person has Steam running in the background. This could mean the person is playing another game or using their browser, but is not actually playing the game. When you look at concurrent players it means the people who are logged into Steam and actively playing the game, so it is a bit different. Even though concurrent users are not quite the same, it is still one way in which Steam measures growth.
When you look at the past, it was back in 2012 when Steam hit 5 million concurrent users. That is a pretty good increase from 5 million to 14 million in just around 5 years. When you look at the numbers even closer you can see that over 2 million concurrent users were from 2016 alone. It was back in January 2015 when Steam passed the 12 million concurrent user mark, so the website has seen a huge increase in gamers.
When it comes to Steam, Valve always sees a huge increase in January for some reason. That is when most of the milestones happen in terms of the users and players. Possibly it is because of Christmas and people getting computers and Steam gift cards for Christmas. There is also the possibility that the huge Winter Sale that happens every year brings in a lot of people as well. People who might not have had Steam before see a game that they want to play on sale, and then sign up for Steam. It was back in 2015 when Valve said that there was 125 million users active on Steam so that number is likely much higher by now.
