TikTok Keeps Top Spot on Apple App Store During Q1 2019

A new report from Sensor Tower is showing that during Q1 2019, TikTok has remained the top app on Apple’s App Store. This news comes not that long after the FTC levied a $5.7 million fine on the company and new age restrictions went into place.

The app is now restricted if the person is younger than 13, but none of this deterred the app from keeping the number one spot on Apple’s App Store. Keep reading to learn more about the new Sensor Tower report and what it showed for both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.

TikTok Remains Number One on Apple App Store Despite Fine

The biggest news from the newly-released report from Sensor Tower is that despite a fine from the FTC, TikTok remains the number one app on Apple’s App Store. It retained the number one spot on Apple and this is the fifth quarter of it reigning supreme. During Q1 2019, TikTok ended up with more than 33 million Apple App Store downloads, which is fairly significant. This comes as restrictions were put into place so that people under the age of 13 can’t use the app.

On Apple’s App Store TikTok remained number one while YouTube took the number two spot, and Instagram came in third. WhatsApp was fourth and Messenger was the fifth most downloaded app in Q1 on Apple’s App store. Twitter ended up being number 16 on the list, which is decent for that social media app. TikTok saw a 3.6 percent year-over-year increase, but we will have to wait and see whether the installs translate to more active users.

TikTok Stays Number One on Apple But not on Android

An interesting take away from the Sensor Tower report is that TikTok didn’t see the same download numbers on Android as it did on iOS. On Google Play Store, WhatsApp was actually the number one app and it managed almost 199 million installs alone. That is huge for WhatsApp and shows the difference between the iOS and Android user base. Messenger was the second most installed app on Android, and TikTok ended up in the third position.

Facebook was the fourth-most downloaded app on Android during Q1 2019, and Instagram rounds out the top five. Between Messenger, WhatsApp, and Facebook, there were more than 150 million installs each, which is pretty impressive for Q1. TikTok also had more than 150 million installs on Android, so it’s still seeing a pretty big jump on Android too. TikTok in particular had a great quarter thanks to India. Just in Q1 alone, TikTok received more than 88.6 million installations from India. That is up 8.2 times more than in Q1 of 2018.

TikTok Numbers Likely to Fall Due to Being Banned in India

While TikTok did see a huge increase thanks to India, that is going to be short lived because the app was banned last month in India for a period of time. India banned TikTok due to the illegal content found within the app, which included pornography. The app was later reinstated in India but the app lost about 15 million downloads during that time it was banned according to Sensor Tower estimates. Had the app not been banned for the better part of April, it would have had the biggest month ever.

One interesting Q1 app that is an up-and-comer was YouTube Kids. This app ended up with more than a 291 percent increase quarter-over-quarter on Android. YouTube Kids saw 29 million downloads in Q1, which puts it right up there with YouTube Music and YouTube in the Top 20 apps. We want to know what you think of all of this news in the comments below.

Are you shocked that TikTok has remained on the top on Apple’s App Store? Do you currently use TikTok and if you do, are you thinking this is just a trend or do you think that the app will be around for a while?
