How To Turn Your Android Smartphone into a Wi-Fi Extender – Anyfi Guide

Jun 23, 2017

In this day and age, nothing is more annoying than having a weak Wi-Fi signal around in your own house. Even if your Wi-Fi signal is strong, there is a high chance that it doesn’t reach the entirety of your house. This basically means that, the further away you are from your router, the worse your Wi-Fi signal will become. You can solve this issue by placing your router at a different location within your house, or by updating its firmware. However, in some cases, it doesn’t really provide you with a lasting solution, or doesn’t fix your Wi-Fi signal at all. With Anyfi, it is possible to turn your (old) Android smartphone into a free Wi-Fi extender.

Android Device Wi-Fi Extender

One of the solutions that people usually use to fix their weak Wi-Fi signals is by purchasing what is called a Wi-Fi extender. A Wi-Fi extender is placed in rooms that have a weak Wi-Fi signal. It picks your Wi-Fi signal up, and boosts it in that particular room. That being said, it’s not guaranteed that a Wi-Fi extender will actually boost your Wi-Fi signal. On top of that, a Wi-Fi extender can be pretty costly, especially if you need more than one of them. Luckily, there is now an app that you can use to turn an Android device into a free Wi-Fi extender.

Anyfi is a free Android app that has several different features, one of them being the Wi-Fi extender feature. This feature allows you to extend the reach of your current Wi-Fi signal. The Anyfi team released a video that demonstrates how the app, and its features, work:

Anyfi Mesh Wi-Fi Network

The Anyfi app is capable of creating a so-called Mesh Wi-Fi Network on your smartphone. This means that, any Android smartphone that has the Anyfi app running on it, will get linked together, creating a network. This allows those Android smartphones to communicate with each other. This results in a larger reach for your Wi-Fi connection. On top of that, there is a VPN feature built into the Anyfi app, which means that the network is pretty secure as well.

Anyfi has another advantage, which depends on the amount of devices that have the app installed on it. By connecting with the P2P network of the app, and opening up your own network, you will gain the opportunity to connect to other people’s Wi-Fi networks. This can be pretty handy for when you are at a location that doesn’t have an open Wi-Fi hotspot. To gain access to the P2P network, you will need to allow Anyfi to create a VPN network first.
