News breaking right now is that WeGame is going global to compete with Steam. For over a decade, Steam has had no real competition in the world of PC gaming, but that is about to change. We have seen some stores over the years including Direct2Drive and GamersGate. While there have been some options out there for the PC gaming world, no one has been able to actually compete with Steam.
That seems like it is about to change as we have learned WeGame is looking to go global. WeGame is the gaming division of Tencent, and things are looking to take off for the company very soon. Keep reading to learn more about how this new digital distribution platform might be directly competing with Steam.
WeGame Looking to Compete with Steam as Global Launch Imminent
The global launch of WeGame is imminent right now, which means soon Steam actually is going to have some competition. WeGame used to be just a small regional digital distribution space, but now it is about to go global. The gaming division known as WeGame, which is part of Tencent, has only been around since September 2017.
During this time, it was available for the PC gaming audience within mainland China. At that point, only 220 games were available on the digital gaming platform. Most of these games were Chinese-made, although some were from partnerships Tencent had created. In addition to tencent, I think it would be a good idea to Sign up with Virgin Games as well.
Tencent does have some good deals with game development studios on an international level. That could allow the company to get even more popular games, especially once it goes global. The Tencent game launcher used to be a thing too, until the WeGame platform itself replaced it. Once this replacement happened, it became a digital storefront for PC games, which is how it could end up competing with Steam. It will be launching in Hong Kong, which means it can skirt the rules that mainland China have.
WeGame Global Launch Possible Due to Hong Kong Location
Getting into more details about this, launching in Hong Kong allows WeGame to get around the rules and restrictions that are found within mainland China. Mainland China has a ton of rules when it comes to media, including games. Foreign media in particular is heavily scrutinized in mainland China.
That is why Microsoft and Sony had issues when it was time to launch gaming consoles. Both companies had to go through levels of censorship in order to get the PS4 and Xbox One launched in China. There are 10 rules that had to be adhered to first, but going through Hong Kong allows WeGame to avoid the regulations and rules.
Even though Tencent has been abiding by the rules, going to Hong Kong to launch WeGame globally means the mainland China rules are out the windows. That means it could host games that mainland China itself would not allow. This allows for more gaming companies to work with WeGame, since the levels of regulation and censorship are not going to be there. Often times, launching in Hong Kong is done before a global launch, so it makes sense that this is a precursor to that event. ‘
WeGame Already Has High-Profile Games Available
The good news is that Tencent has already come out to say that WeGame is in development right now in Hong Kong. Tencent also went onto say that the Hong Kong location will be a distribution area to get the gaming platform out there to the global audience. Tencent is already popular, having a ton of high-profile games available in the partnership deals. That is because Tencent has a stake in Epic Games, which is the company behind Fortnite.
Tencent also has a stake in Activision-Blizzard, PUBG Corporation, and Riot Games. PUBG Corporation is the company behind PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds and Riot Games is known for League of Legends. Of course, Activision-Blizzard is known for making World of Warcraft, Overwatch, and Call of Duty. Part of the reason that Tencent is trying to launch globally is because Steam recently opened in the Chinese market.
WeGame responded to Valve opening up Steam to China by then deciding to get WeGame out there to the global market. Steam could see significant growth because of Valve opening up support in China. Tencent is wanting in on this action which is why WeGame is going to expand. We will keep you updated if we learn more about the launch on a global level.
